Microservices Architecture: When and Why to Migrate from Monoliths

Monolithic apps work great at the start, but scaling hits limits. Learn when your team is ready to transition to a microservices architecture.

Every successful software project usually begins as a simple monolithic application. However, as user bases and feature sets expand, scaling a monolith becomes increasingly challenging.

1. The Limitations of Monoliths

In a monolithic architecture, a single bug or high traffic spike in one module can impact the entire application. Scaling specific high-demand features independently is nearly impossible.

2. The Microservices Advantage

Breaking down the system into independent, loosely coupled services allows teams to deploy updates faster, scale specific services based on load, and use different technology stacks where appropriate.

Conclusion

Migration should be driven by business and scaling needs, not just hype. Start by extracting peripheral services before tackling core business logic.
